National champion Hoosiers honored with Senate resolution

Sens. Todd Young and Jim Banks introduced the resolution honoring the Indiana football team, along with those who supported their run to a national title.

WASHINGTON — The national champion Indiana Hoosiers were honored on Capitol Hill Friday.

Sens. Todd Young and Jim Banks, both Republicans from Indiana, introduced a resolution congratulating the Hoosiers to the U.S. Senate Friday. Senators passed the resolution unanimously.

Indiana finished a perfect 16-0 season with the university’s first-ever football national championship Monday, Jan. 19 with a 27-21 win over the University of Miami.

“This self-described team of ‘misfits’ inspired Hoosiers throughout their incredible season and made the entire State of Indiana deeply proud,” the resolution read.

In addition to recognizing the team’s accomplishments, the resolution mentioned Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Fernando Mendoza and offensive lineman Carter Smith, who earned consensus All-American honors for the Hoosiers.

“Indiana is so proud of this team and their historic 16-0 championship season. The whole country was cheering for Coach Cignetti, Fernando Mendoza, and the Hoosiers as they showed incredible class, teamwork, and grit. As an alum and Indiana’s new U.S. Senator I couldn’t be more proud and I can’t wait to see them do it again next season,” said Banks.
