Banks talks Speedway Slammer, marijuana legalization

WHITLEY COUNTY, Ind. (WPTA) – U.S. Senator Jim Banks (R-Ind) took time during a Monday visit to Whitley County to share his thoughts on issues that have been making headlines recently.

The Senator shared his support for Indiana’s role in the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations, specifically, the state agreeing to a house a 1,000-bed detention center nicknamed “The Speedway Slammer” by Department of Homeland Security Kristi Noem.

“Well, Indiana will do its part to help President Trump deport illegal criminals not just from Indiana, but from the Midwest,” Banks said. ”And that’s why President Trump and Governor Braun have negotiated this deal to use the Miami Correctional Facility and the empty beds at the state prison just down the road from here to house illegal criminals before they’re deported.”

“And I fully support that.“

Banks also commented on President Donald Trump’s recent comments on reclassifying marijuana to a Schedule 3 drug. Marijuana is currently classified as a Schedule 1 drug, similar to heroin and ecstasy.

During a press conference Monday, the president said his administration is looking into it, describing it as “very complicated.”

“You have a lot of states that legalized it, it’s caused even more crime and issues,” Banks said. “I hope Indiana is never a state that legalizes marijuana, by the way.”
